Local Historical Site Demolished.
'Collapse Hazard' Sited by Engineers

It was a cold and blustery day at the Niagara Gorge, and only a few locals were on hand to watch the implosion of a local landmark. Earlier today, with little to no fanfare, the natural cavern known as "Devil's Hole" was demolished by several small explosive charges. A representative of the Army Corp of Engineers stated, "There have been attempts for years to buttress or reinforce the structure, but to no avail. We have been left with no choice but to bring the cave ceiling down before it collapsed on a tourist."

The site has been the location of many historical events, including the famous visit of President McKinley to the site only hours before his assassination, but efforts to maintain the site have grown increasingly difficult over the last few years as State budget shortfalls have left little money left in the Parks Department's budget.

Logging at Zoar Valley?
DEC Forms Exploratory Committee
Art Voice Blog - 12/9/2011

Locals and enviromental activists are up in arms over a new proposal to bring limited logging to the state's oldest forest. Reports first surfaced yesterday that local logging concerns have put forward a proposal to the DEC to perform 'controlled thinning' of the old growth forest.

"Logging gets a bad rap, we like to think of ourselves as stewards of the forest. By pruning out the dead and dying trees, we can actually strengthen biodiversity. Folks who are worried about destructive road building and heavy machinery don't understand the resource we have in the Cattaraugus creek, we simply float logs downstream without any of the enviromental damage of logging in areas more removed from running water. It's a great chance for the state to create jobs!" says Sal Petrovich, a representative for Jackman Lumber of Angola, New York. His firm has apparently already begun marking trees for removal as a demonstration to the local authorities of what such a project would look like.
