Re: Aftermath: Returning the Keys 4/24/2012
Wishbone nods. "Please forgive me if my storytelling skills aren't up to par. As I said, I'm no Galliard."
"We don't know much about the vampires," he begins. "Another drawback of being a young Sept. Up until recently, we simply steered clear of them; there were bigger threats to deal with, and we couldn't afford to split our attention."
"Several months ago, we started gathering information on them." Here, he spreads out his battered gas station map, pointing out the various enclaves of vampires in Buffalo. "We also noticed something very strange and very disturbing...here." He points to the black circle on Grand Island. "A hole in reality, a tear."
"Needless to say, we started to investigate. As it turns out, the hole on Grand Island was the work of a powerful and malevolent being, sometimes referred to as "He Who Will Come." This being sought to enter this world. Towards that end, his agents have been at work for years, opening three lesser holes in reality. The larger hole was at the center of the triangle they formed, and they held it open. Because of these holes, reality in the area of the Western Door started to unravel. Impossible things started to happen--flying saucers, walking statues, you name it. The Gauntlet between this world and the Umbra, and between the Umbra and the Dark Umbra, began to tatter and fray as the worlds were forced closer together."
He pauses at this point to take a breath, collect his thoughts, and see if anyone has questions.

Re: Aftermath: Returning the Keys 4/24/2012
Wishbone continues:
"The theft of the Keys was apparently an attempt to keep them from being used to close these holes. The vampire who did so had a lot of power--like, "Notice a vision and replace it with the words "DIE GAROU DIE" levels of power--but we were eventually able to get a scent. Billy Singer came up with the idea," Here he nods to Billy, "...to look, not for the keys, but for the disruption they would cause in the Umbra if they were together."
"We tracked the scent to its source, but the leech had apparently already fled. As Sewer Pipe has already said, the threat was great enough that all rose to the occasion. Even our cubs were forced to go to battle to defend Falling Waters, and Skippy accompanied the war party that tracked the thief." Here he nods to Skippy. "We retrieved the keys, and used their power to begin closing the holes. The problem was, the holes were holding each other open; close one, and it would shortly reopen. We had to close them all in a very short period of time. The Leeches had apparently learned of the threat as well, and were likewise attempting to close the holes--self-preservation can make even a Leech try to do the right thing once in a while. Since there was a greater threat, we mostly ignored them."
"Each hole led to a different realm. At the hole closest to home, we were set upon by dark banes that possessed the remains of our honored dead, forcing us to lay them to rest once again. Another was concealed within a great dome of Weaver-stone, which collapsed as we entered, nearly crushing us. The third was guarded by a massive being that called itself the Judge, who insisted that he would judge us all and would not allow us to close the portal. Sewer Pipe Two Moons and our other Ahrouns showed him what they thought of his "judgment."
"Once the outlying holes were closed, we rushed to the central hole. Again, the leeches were there, milling around in confusion. Our beta, Works For Food, led the way into the amusement park where the hole was located. Reality was twisted and warped within; we battled everything from Fomori to animated carousel horses. Finally, we confronted the Key thief, who was apparently close to completing the ritual that would open the portal."
"Sewer Pipe led the attack. The creature sought to resist, but his power seemed to desert him. Sewer Pipe and the others took him down as they would any prey."
Wishbone frowns. "But even as the thief died and his ritual failed, lighting tore through the clouds overhead. A great voice shouted "I AM REBORN!" Our Philodoxes called forth the spirits to duty, including the totems of our packs. Reclamation told us that the largest Bane he had ever seen had just been born a short distance away."
"Sewer Pipe called for us to use the spirits to slay the leeches. In hindsight, he was probably correct. At the time, though, we thought we were about to engage in battle against a monstrous Bane, and did not wish to be diverted or to fight a two-front battle. We rushed to the site of the birth, and found...nothing. The Bane had fled, erasing all trace of its existence. We sought to track it, but it eluded our efforts."
He scowls.
"And, while we were seeking this Bane, the leeches turned on one another and nearly burned Buffalo to the ground. Such is the nature of evil; it feeds upon itself. There were apparently two different factions of leeches, and there may have been a third common enemy to both; I am unclear as to the politics behind their stupidity and wanton destruction."
"In the meantime, the Bane continues to elude us. It apparently has the power to completely conceal itself, to the point where spirits report a momentary cessation of the Umbra. The only clue we have are these symbols." Here, he displays the Arabic symbols that spell out "2 2 x 2."
"We do not know yet what they mean. The Bane has been described as one-seventh of a dark God reborn...but that is all we know. I hoped perhaps your Theurges might have the wisdom that I lack in this matter."
He spreads his hands. "And that is the tale, as best I can tell it. If there is anything I left unclear, I apologize, and will do my best to explain it."

Seeing that there are no questions, Wishbone bows. "There are still a lot of questions to answer, Alpha. If you don't mind my asking...does the Bane I described sound familiar to you? To any of you? "One-seventh of a dark god"...it doesn't sound good. I don't think it's something we can just ignore."

There is plainly some mind-linked discussion going on.
" We will see what we can find. This was not something we were expecting, " says the Alpha after a long pause.

"If there's one universal truth, it's that the quiet times don't last, and there will always be opportunities for the Ahrouns to wet their claws. May yours be victorious when that time comes. And now..." Wishbone draws forth the Key of Closing, holding it out to the Alpha. "I believe this belongs to you, Alpha. Falling Waters thanks the Hand of Gaia for its use."

"It might be unwise to hold these both. Thus I present the Key of Opening to your esteemed Beta." Billy bows and holds the Key out to her, lying on his open palm. When she takes it, he leaves without another word.

"Thank you for agreeing to speak with me," Wishbone says to them. "I wanted to thank you for all you've done for Chases Cars-rhya. The Hand of Gaia's reputation for healing arts and wisdom is well-deserved." He pauses thoughtfully. "I know you would rather have Chases Cars remain here for a time still, and I wish that were possible. Since it isn't, though, I hoped to learn more from you about the nature of his condition. I am nowhere near the healer you are...but I'll try to see to his needs as best I can, if you and he will allow me to do so."

Re: Aftermath: Returning the Keys 4/24/2012
The youngest of the three chooses to speak,
" When Cars arrived, he had suffered deep and severe damage to his very soul. There were chronic physical conditions as well; he will carry that limp with him the rest of his days; but it was the Harano and damage to his psyche that concerned us most. We believe he is on the road to a full recovery, but he will remain hyper-sensitive to Wyrm energies for decades. Any more than a few days outside of a Caern and merely environmental factors will cause his health to fade... or more worrisome, the Taint may work its way back in... leaving all our work in vain. "
The eldest clears her throat, then speaks:
" One never recovers from the trauma Chases Cars experienced, but with proper precautions, there he is no reason he cannot serve your Sept in an advisory capacity for many years to come. But you must understand; he has no protection against the Wyrm remaining. His soul lies naked for any who might come upon it. I know Falling Waters needs guidance; but the proper precautions must be taken. "

Wishbone nods, gravely. His eyes flicker to his hand--a hand with four fingers--and then back to the Elders. "He's family," he says, simply. "We take care of family. Other than staying in the Caern, and under the guardianship of the Maid, what precautions would you recommend?" His demeanor is that of a student eager to learn; he may be Master of Rites at Falling Waters, but he also knows he has a long way to go, and listening to those with more experience and wisdom is a big part of that.

The youngest scribbles notes on a small sheet of paper, he also hands you a small stone.
" Here, follow these directions, call if there's any change. We include the Fetish of Winter's Sleep merely as a precaution. "
It reads (in that insufferable scrawl Homids use):
(a) Rite of Cleansing - Once a month and once immediately following any trip out of Caern.
(b) Healing Talens as needed for back and hip pain. He won't ask for it.
(c) We recommend checking for Wyrm Taint every few weeks minimum and immediately following Cleansings.
(d) Attune to this little Fetish. It is mated to another we have implanted next to his heart. Activate this Fetish and Cars will painlessly die, no matter where he is in the Tellurium.

Well, it's a good thing Wishbone's been working on reading Homid-squiggles. He's even able to keep his lips from moving (much.) Even so, he pores over it several times to ensure that he understands the instructions, then nods. "I hope it never becomes needful," he says. "But...thank you. For everything."

The eldest nods, but smiles as he does, " Of course. Keep up the good work over there. Please relay our love to the Maid; our work leaves us with very little time to come pay our respects. We learned much of what we know about poisons, spiritual and actual, from her wise council, and we remember our debt. "
He bows formally at this, your audience is clearly at an end.
/Too many commas, but I can't get it to parse without them. Bah.

"Your regards and your thanks; I will deliver them both.' Wishbone bows respectfully and takes his leave. He has one more detour to make, but a minor one--simply to exchange contact information with the Sept's Gatekeeper, so that a bridge opening can be coordinated at the appropriate time.
Once that's done, he awaits his companions; once they've finished their business, he's ready to go.

Once Skippy has finished saying "Hi!" to every living creature (that doesn't have a do not disturb signal) and many nonliving creatures in the Caern, he catches up and leaves with the group.
