Current Sept Positions

Now that it looks like we have (for the moment) one caern and one sept and everyone's there, it's probably time to start formalizing who holds what position.

A quick rundown of positions, for those who may not be completely familiar with them. At the moment, we may well not have anyone qualified for some of the positions (like Gatekeeper) but this should help people who want to work towards those positions:

Grand Elder (Alpha): Speaks for the Council of Elders and usually has the final word on issues involving the Sept as a whole.

Warder: The caern's chief guardian. The Warder concerns himself purely with the caern's well-being. Everyone answers to his orders, including the Council, on issues relating to the safety of the caern.

Guardians: The members of the guardian pack are the Warder's soldiers, tasked with defending the caern.

Master of the Rite: The Master of the Rite is responsible for monitoring all rituals performed in the caern and bawn, and ensuring that they're performed properly and don't pose a threat to the caern. No ritual may be performed at the heart of the caern unless the Master of the Rite knows it.

Gatekeeper: The Gatekeeper is the sept's liason with other septs. He monitors the Moon Bridge and opens or closes it as necessary. He has the authority to determine whether another sept may open up a Moon Bridge to the caern, and to seal off all access to the caern's bridge in time of war. The Gatekeeper needs to know all of the Moon Bridge rites and most of the Moon Bridge gifts.

Keeper of the Land: The Keeper of the Land maintains the physical integrity of the caern and the bawn that surrounds it. In the case of Falling Waters, this is a big job; it's a very large, very ancient caern smack dab in between a major concentration of Weaver spirits and a major concentration of Blight spirits.

Master of the Challenge: The Master of the Challenge oversees all challenges. He establishes the type of contest and the appropriate victory conditions. He then monitors the context and declares the winner and loser.


Lesser Offices
These roles aren't generally full-time jobs. In a small caern, they may be held by the same Garou who holds one of the major offices. It's important to understand that "lesser" doesn't mean the roles aren't important. When there's a crime to be judged, the Truthcatcher is the most important member of the Sept, and his authority to judge trumps even that of the Council and the Alpha. However, they're not roles that are constantly required, and as such, the holders of these offices don't need to spend the large majority of their time at the caern. Because of this, they're a good opportunity for someone to take responsibility within the caern without getting tied down full-time.

Master of the Howl: The Master of the Howl (usually a Galliard) leads the Opening Howl that begins every moot. He is also responsible for ensuring a smooth transition from one section of the moot to the next.

Caller of the Wyld: The Caller invokes the sept totems during a moot to strengthen the caern. The Caller, usually a Theurge, leads the sept in honoring the various totems of the sept and tribes. Then he performs the rites to reach into the Umbra and contact the spirits that lend their strength to the Caern.

Truthcatcher: The Truthcatcher is almost invariably a Philodox. It is his responsibility to mediate disputes and judge crimes. Generally, this is handled as the need arises; only the most serious crimes are reserved for a moot.

Talesinger: The Talesinger is usually a Galliard. He leads the sept in stories during each moot, and also chooses which Garou will be honored for their deeds by being selected to play the roles in these stories. Frequently, the Talesinger weaves Gifts into the stories he tells, most often Shadows by the Fire Light.

Wyrm Foe: The Wyrm Foe is always a great warrior, and usually an Ahroun. He leads the sept in the Revel that concludes every moot, urging them into a frenzy of excitement. He then leads them in a chase throughout the bawn, clearing it of any intruders. The Wyrm Foe also frequently leads war parties against the minions of the Wyrm.

Den Mother/Den Father: The Garou in charge of the instruction and well-being of cubs. The Den Mother/Father should be well-versed in the Litany and the aspects of Garou life.

Since some roles were held by different people at the different caerns, I'm going to hold off on posting them until it's absolutely clear who's stepping up. If you currently hold a sept position, or which to stand as a candidate for one, please post indicating that this is so.

That's one of the positions I wasn't sure about, since we had a warder at each caern. Didn't know which of you was going to step down.

We are also missing the Position of Fool.

The Fool: Is a typicaly Ragabash position. The Fools job is to question the decisions, and actions of the sept to make people thing and rethink their actions. The Job is not without risk as making Ahrouns think over and over again and to justify thier decisions well Rage Tests are involved.

Ragabash get the dirt end of that stick. Can you make a title for a position any less appealing? I might try to claim it soon just so I can rename it... :-p

The reason I didn't list the Fool is because it tends to change from Moot to Moot; usually, one is named by the Garou performing the Moot Rite. If we want a permanent Fool, of course, that's totally fine.
