Given the (to me) surprising reaction to my announcement about the Bawn and Caern Entrances, I thought it would be helpful to open up a new thread for general Q&A. Got any Falling Waters related questions? Curious how the Caern handles garbage? What color the Maid's eyes are? How did Riordan Cliffgrazer Die? What ever happened to those Weaver Bubbles back from Season one? Fire away!

Obscure but Obvious Questions Thread - The Return Empty Practical matters

Post  Thomas Rhodes Tue May 28, 2013 6:59 pm

The real-world entrance is through the behind-the-falls tour, yes? Garbage is probably added to the dumpsters of that business.

Perhaps there has been a more detailed description of the living areas than the one (not) posted here? My specific questions are in reference to it:

Given that the caern long predates plumbing, who bears responsibility for emptying the chamber pots? Is there a central room or rooms for elimination (men's room, lady's room, lupus's room), or does each residential chamber (are there individual residential chambers?) have a "house of office" in the corner, and each room's occupants are responsible for the emptying thereof? I suspect there is some sort of drain out into the river for the effluent, but if not, where is the waste sent? If so, how is the drain itself kept clean?

Is there a fresh water well in the caern, or must water be gathered by walking to the surface and carrying back a full bucket?

Does the primitive nature of the sanitary arrangements irritate the hell out of the resident homid Glass Walkers?

What is the nature of the lighting within the caern's different spaces?

Now, one can argue that this is trivia and unimportant to the game. But I feel like having a realistic sense of the place and of the practicalities helps maintain the atmosphere for a WoD game. Wonder Woman never has to worry about where her next meal is coming from, because that's not the superhero thing. But WoD characters are supposed to be more grounded. A vampire should be always keeping an eye on his herd, and a garou should have to consider the local prey population as a genuine problem.

Most of these can be answered with a clarification. Before the Olmstead teardown and remodel on the upper levels in the late Nineteenth century, the upper levels of the Caern did in fact have very primitive drainage and non-existent plumbing. However, the Kinfolk architect Olmstead and the Glasswalkers of the Eighteen-Nineties engaged in a full modernization of the Caern during that period. Water piping and gas lines were installed in the Caern, both connecting from municipal lines on the US side. To the relief of modern Garou, this means that fresh water is available from spigots located throughout the first level (main hall and living areas) of the Caern. Best to let them flow for a bit to go clean though. Rest rooms are located throughout the Caern. Specific places for the waste of Lupus was not considered in this build, and has been a source of mild discomfort thereafter.

The gas lines were abandoned in the '20's after a series of fires. The current lighting scheme seems to be of 'magical' and electrical origin. To be more specific, the large natural lighting of the Main Hall and the Hall of Assembly does not seem to be connected to any electrical system, while electrical wiring has been drilled into most of the side rooms and living areas. The kitchen has been purely electric since the move away from gas.

Wastewater and potable water are both kept in reserve in large cisterns to the east of the main Caern. Mechanisms are in place for both these systems to be set to flood the Caern in times of emergency. Though obviously there have not been many live drills of this system. Wastwater is slowly released into the river from storage, though the exact nature of how that works (and how well) has never been explored.

Obscure but Obvious Questions Thread - The Return Empty Local Prey

Well Most of the Garou have Jobs or other Income and Hunt at Wegmans, Tops or some other store. And Yes an Urban Caern is not a great place to have a large number of Lupus who want to run free and hunt.
